An outer ear infection, also known as otitis externa or "swimmer's ear," is an infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal. It is commonly caused by bacteria and can develop after water becomes trapped in the ear, following ear cleaning with cotton buds, or from minor skin irritation.

Common symptoms include:

  • Ear pain or tenderness, especially when touching or pulling the ear

  • Itching inside the ear

  • Redness or swelling of the ear canal

  • Ear discharge

  • A feeling of fullness or blocked hearing

  • Mild temporary hearing loss

During your appointment, one of our trained pharmacists will assess your symptoms and examine your ear where appropriate. If your condition is suitable for treatment in the pharmacy, they will recommend the most appropriate over-the-counter treatment or, where clinically appropriate and available, provide treatment under the relevant pharmacy service.

If your symptoms suggest a more serious infection, you have severe pain, significant swelling, a high temperature, symptoms lasting longer than expected, or you are not suitable for pharmacy treatment, the pharmacist will advise you on the next steps and refer you to your GP or another healthcare professional if necessary.

Booking an assessment allows you to receive expert advice quickly and helps ensure you receive the most appropriate care for your symptoms.
